Proper Graphic Design Art File Submission for Printing

Recommended File Types for Art Submission

To ensure the highest quality print, here are the ideal file types:

  • Acrobat PDF (Flattened)
  • TIFF (with Zip Compression)
  • JPEG (Maximum Quality)
  • Any Rasterized/Bitmapped 300dpi File

Acceptable File Types

These file types can also be submitted, though flattened PDF remains optimal:

  • Acrobat PDF (Unflattened)
  • Adobe Illustrator (with Outlined Fonts)
  • Adobe Photoshop (Flattened)
  • EPS or PS (with Outlined Fonts)

  • Publisher Documents
  • Corel Draw Print Shop/Paint Shop
  • Any MS Office Program

Key Requirements for Quality Submission

Resolution

Ensure files are submitted in 300 dpi. Lower resolutions like 72 dpi will require resizing, affecting image quality.

File Size and Borders

  • Size: Design in the exact size being ordered; resizing will only be done by request
  • Borders: For a balanced border, leave at least a 0.25" margin around all edges.

Font Management

Convert fonts to paths when possible (Illustrator, FreeHand), or rasterize text in Photoshop. This prevents font issues during printing.

File Naming

Use unique and descriptive file names that relate to the job name for efficiency. For example: DrJohn_4x6_front.pdf.

Bleed, Trim & Safety

  • Bleed: Leave 1/8" bleed on all sides to avoid trimming critical design elements.
  • Trim: Set 1/8" after the bleed to avoid cutting into text or essential content.
  • Safety: Ensure layout content is within the safe area, clear of edges.

Color Settings

  • Color Spaces: Use CMYK for print and RGB for digital displays.

Black Usage

  • Rich Black: Use 30% Cyan, 30% Magenta, 30% Yellow, 100% Black for large areas.
  • 100% Black: Use 100% Black for small text (avoid Rich Black here to prevent blurring).
